Summary for 2008 English MYE Paper 2
In the new breed of universities like New College, students form a contract with a professor on his study methods within a type of discipline. For a student to graduate from New College, seven typical contracts, study projects and a thesis paper must be completed. New College doesn't have letter or point averages to grade the students; instead they use `narrative evaluations' and remarks by the instructor. This way, there are no worries for grades or competing with other students. Their study methods allow students to gain interest in a subject, allow them to be responsible and find out which subject they are interested in. To schools like New College, academic and skills like research are more important than anything else. Employers prefer workers that have well-rounded knowledge and skills instead of only having knowledge in specific fields. Therefore, they prefer undergraduate programmes having more skills like critical thinking, reasoning after analyzing, writing and oral communication skills as well as the skill to apply the things learnt to solve problems in real life.
